From the start point in Croxley, Herts, you will either head North or South on the Grand Union Canal, with options to branch off if you get far enough!
North
Cruising North will take you through some wonderful countryside, interesting locks and some cute bridges to negotiate.
You'll soon pass Cassiobury Park with its amazing walks, huge playground and big paddling area for the little ones (or not so little ones!) to enjoy, and a lovely Café. There is also a beautiful picturesque shallow river close to the canal which is popular for paddlers and dogs alike.
Going on from there you will go through..
Kings Langley, Apsley, Hemel Hempstead, Berkhamstead, Tring, Aylesbury and possibly on further. (see map)
All of these areas are interesting for different reasons, and all look different when seen from the water.
There are many lovely pubs along the route, and we have listed most of them so you could plan ahead for places you fancy stopping at.
South
Heading south will take you through some really varied scenery as you make your way towards or beyond London.
There is a lot of greenery as you pass through places like Rickmansworth, Batchworth, Yeading and Harefield. In Rickmansworth you will pass a Tesco supermarket where boaters can moor up for a bit of shopping!
You'll see it becoming a little more industrial as you get closer to London, this is a fascinating look at another side of canal life.
You'll pass Little Venice, a very hip and cool area of the Grand Union just outside London, and a really picturesque area.
We have done the painstaking job of checking out all the pubs along the North and South routes, so you can find out all about them here..
